Wolverhampton – Worcester Bosch 4000 Loft Installation & Full Heating System Upgrade
Back boilers. Solid in their day, but this one had definitely done its time.
We were called out to a property in Wolverhampton where the heating system was well past its best. The customer was still running an old open-vented Y-plan setup with a back boiler tucked behind the fireplace. Radiators weren’t heating properly, and the whole system was showing its age, not ideal when you’re planning a full home renovation.
Under the floorboards: a hidden headache
The plan was simple: remove the old boiler, install a new combi in the loft, and replace the radiators throughout. But as we started cutting into the pipework, we quickly discovered the real culprit, severe internal blockages. Some sections of pipe were restricted by over 90% due to years of sludge build-up. That kind of restriction doesn’t just slow things down, it can damage boilers, increase energy bills, and leave parts of the house cold.
The upgrade: Worcester Bosch 4000 combi boiler
We recommended a full conversion to a sealed combination boiler system, ditching the tanks and simplifying everything. The customer opted for a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000, a reliable and efficient choice for homes like this. We installed the boiler in the loft to save space downstairs, running a brand-new 28mm gas supply to ensure safe and proper operation.
To protect the system long-term (and unlock Worcester’s 10-year guarantee), we installed a Worcester system filter, a limescale reducer, and a shock arrestor as part of the setup. These extras don’t just tick boxes, they make a real difference in how the system performs over time.
New radiators, fresh pipework, and skirting board-ready
The customer was also replacing their skirting boards, so we supplied and installed all-new radiators throughout the property and raised them to allow for the new finish. With the original flow and return pipework in such poor condition, we made the call to repipe the system, ensuring every radiator had clean, unrestricted supply. We also added a new radiator in the airing cupboard, small touch, big comfort.
To make future maintenance easier, we installed a remote filling loop in the airing cupboard, giving the customer an accessible way to top up system pressure without climbing into the loft.
Smarter heating with Hive
We finished off the install with a Hive Active Heating thermostat, giving the customer mobile control over their heating. Great for keeping the bills down and comfort up, especially when you’re out and about or juggling a busy family routine.
All wrapped up in three days
Despite the unexpected complications, the job was completed in just three days. That’s a full heating system upgrade, new boiler, new gas run, all-new radiators and pipework, smart controls and flushing, all done with minimal disruption and zero corners cut.
